4 Days Mount Meru Trekking


4 days/ 3 nights Itinerary

“Mount Meru” is the best for acclimatization prior to Mount Kilimanjaro climb; The Mountain is the third highest peak in Africa and is the second highest mountain in Tanzania at 4,568m.

Arrive at the Kilimanjaro International or similar Airport, pick up and transferred to the Springlands Hotel or similar hotel in Moshi or Arusha for overnight bed and breakfast.
1st Day: Momela – Miriakamba :(10km,ascent 1014 metres) 5hours trek.

    We drive from Arusha to Momela-Gate. After a short registration at the Gate our walk will begin with full armed ranger escorting us, simply we can see along the way the wild animals including elephants, zebras, and giraffe, monkeys, antelope, and often elephants along the route. Dinner and overnight night at Miriakamba Hut.

  • 10:00 hrs: Departure from Momela Gate.
  • 11:15 hrs: Fig Tree Arch,an anormous strangler fig with a large opening passing right through it (c.1920 m)
  • 12:15 hrs: The foaming, rushing falls at maio (c.2040 m)
  • 13:30 hrs: Kitoto View point.Picnic lunch on the trail (c 2500 m)
  • 14:00 hrs: The crater floor of Mount Meru (2600 m)
  • 15:00 hrs: Arrival at Miriakamba Hut
  • The afternoon is devoted to an exploration of the sorroundings area.

2nd day: Miriakamba – Saddle Hut:4km,ascent 1056metres(2514 – 3570),5hrs treks

    The walk from Miriakamba-Hut to the saddle below Little Meru is a short day but a steep climb. The walk will take us slowly along the ridge for a spectacular view of the Meru Crater and the impressive Ash Cone. After hot lunch at Saddle Hut we can make a short climb to the summit of Little Meru (3,820m) for superb views just before sunset.

  • 08:00 hrs: Departure from Miriakamba
  • 10:30 hrs: ”The Elephant’s Back” View point (mgongo wa tembo) (c 3200 m).
  • 11:30 hrs: Crossing the tree line,after which the terrain bocomes hearthland (c.3300 m)
  • 13:00 hrs:Arrival at saddle hut.Lunch in the hut ,followed in the afternoon by shot excursion into the surrounding terrain.

3rd Day: Rest day

    We start early at around 1:30 a.m. to climb steeply to Rhino Point (3,800 m.) and on to Cobra Point (4350m). We reach the summit (4,566 m) on time for sunrise there is a possibility to see Kilimanjaro Peak above the clouds. The final part of the climb is along a spectacular narrow ridgeline between the sheer inner cliffs and the sloping outer wall of the crater. We take a short rest and brunch at Saddle Hut before continuing the descent to the Meriakamba Hut.

  • Rest at saddle Hut to help acclimatization.Excursion into the surrounding terrain,and those having sufficient interest/Strength can make a 2-hour climb little meru (3820 m).

4th Day.Saddle Hut- Meru Summit- Momella 

22km,ascent 996 metres (3570-4566m,5km/5-6hours),descent 3066m(4566-1500m, 17km/10hour).Total treks of 16 – 17 hours

We take a short and fast descent way through open grassland and mixed forest, with a possibility of seeing wildlife before reaching Momella Gate in the late morning. The returning transfer will be waiting at Momella Gate to pick you to your hotel in Arusha/Moshi.

  • 00:30 hrs: Wake up and a light meal
  • O1:00 hrs: Departure from Saddle Hut.
  • 03:00 hrs: Rhino point view point (3850 m).
  • 07:00 hrs: Arrival at the summit of Meru.
  • O7:30 hrs: Descent from the summit starts.
  • 09:30 hrs: Rhino Point viewpoint (3850 m)
  • 10:30 hrs: Arrival at Saddle Hut (3570 m ),relaxation and alight meal.
  • 12:oo hrs: Descent continues
  • 14:00 hrs: Arrival at Miriakamba Hut (2514 m)
  • 17 – 18hrs: Arrival at Momela.
